STEM II – NW Washington
Overview
We take Science, Technology, Engineering and Math to the moon and beyond! Our campers launch rockets, design water filtration systems, dust for fingerprints, build roller coasters and robots, and create their own video games with Hopscotch. Each week of camp focuses on a specific topic, which campers explore through various projects and challenges, such as identifying inks and liquids left at a crime scene to find out whodunit in Forensics. All locations enjoy water play and indoor/outdoor games each day, and any experiments that can be done outside will be. After all, it is summer camp.

Weekly Themes
H2Whoa!
Get ready to experiment, explore, and be inspired by our watery world! From tide patterns to ocean zones to marine biology, campers will dive deep into bodies of water around the globe. We’ll investigate the many uses of H2O, experiment with oil spill restoration, engineer water slides, and test how arctic animals stay warm. Throughout the week’s projects, campers will learn why it’s vital to conserve and protect this precious natural resource. Water you waiting for? Sign up today!
Robotics with Dash, Dot, and Sphero
Using Wonder Workshop’s Dot and Dash combo and Sphero SPRK, campers will use digital programming language to bring robots to life. Campers will work together in small groups to master numerous games and challenges, including robo-jousting, maneuvering through a maze/obstacle course, using the robots to act out a narrative, playing a xylophone, and coding the robots to respond to movement, color, and sound. Whether this is your camper’s first time coding or they’re already a Blockly whiz, this week is a digital dream for all levels!
iPad Coding: Game Design
In this program, campers will learn important coding concepts such as sequences, variables and conditionals, as well as programming skills to make widgets jump, create fireworks and use drawing tools, all within the fun and accessible world of video game design. They’ll also create their own games including Whack a Mole, Tapper Game and Geometry Dash. At the end of the week, campers will celebrate their work with a Game Design Showcase, during which they’ll share their own games and play games designed by other group members
LEGO Harry Potter Master Engineering
Looking for an exploratory, hands-on STEM program based on building? This is it! Led by trained Play-Well instructors, campers will be guided through daily activities and challenges incorporating physics, engineering, and architecture based on the week’s theme. This week incorporates a fun, imaginative world that kids already know: Harry Potter. Play-Well engineering is about the process, not the result, which means this camp is a great place for kids to learn and discover through play.
LEGO Mine, Craft, Build: Survival Game
Looking for an exploratory, hands-on STEM program based on building? This is it! Led by trained Play-Well instructors, campers will be guided through daily activities and challenges incorporating physics, engineering, and architecture based on the week’s theme. This week incorporates a fun, imaginative world that kids already know: Minecraft. Play-Well engineering is about the process, not the result, which means this camp is a great place for kids to learn and discover through play.
Invention Convention
Does your child enjoy taking things apart to see how they work, or dream of designing a robot to clean their room? Then don’t miss this invention-themed week, where campers will create a blueprint, build a prototype, and pitch their own invention to fix a problem or help a community. Using LittleBits magnetic electric circuitry, they’ll be able to bring their ideas to life in our digitalized world. We’ll also learn about famous innovators and the obstacles they had to overcome to achieve their dreams. At the end of the week, campers will present their ideas to counselors and fellow group members “shark tank” style for compliments and critique.
Conservation Crusaders
Headfirst goes green as we celebrate nature and environmental conservation! This week will feature interactive activities and experiments, such as building mini-greenhouses, creating natural cleaners, and making our own water filtration systems. We’ll discuss conservation techniques, innovative methods for safeguarding the environment, and cutting-edge green technology. The week culminates in a group project for campers to create and record their own environmental Public Service Announcement, hopefully creating a new generation of green leaders and activists for the environment. May the forest be with you!
LEGO Boost + iPad Coding
What do a workable guitar, a friendly cat, and a humanoid robot have in common? They’re the beginning of endless creations campers can engineer during LEGO Boost™ Robotics week! This visual learning platform is ‘learn-by-doing’ and will challenge campers to tinker and toggle their way through engaging projects. Once campers finish crafting their robots, they’ll be able to program them to detect light, color, sound, and touch, allowing the experience to be personalized and adapted to the coder’s interests. Awarded the 2018 Tech Toy of the Year for its utility, innovation, and charm, this week is one your camper won’t want to miss!
Swim
This camp includes a daily Water Play session. Water Play is a fun way for campers to cool off in the middle of the day. The water play activity will vary throughout the week, but will always be a fun and active way for campers to cool down from the summer heat.
