STEM III – NW Washington

Overview

We take Science, Technology, Engineering and Math to the moon and beyond! Our campers launch rockets, design water filtration systems, dust for fingerprints, build roller coasters and robots, and create their own video games with Hopscotch. Each week of camp focuses on a specific topic, which campers explore through various projects and challenges, such as identifying inks and liquids left at a crime scene to find out whodunit in Forensics. All locations enjoy water play and indoor/outdoor games each day, and any experiments that can be done outside will be. After all, it is summer camp

Weekly Themes

Snap Circuits Light/Robotics with Dash, Dot and Sphero

From robo-jousting to light-up propeller fans, this week is a technicolor digital dream! Campers will be led through an array of scaffolded circuitry projects involving strobe lights, spinners, LED fibers, music players, and even a glowing egg. Participants will work in teams to follow the highly visual, easy-to-implement Snap Circuits Light™ curriculum at their own pace. Beyond exploring circuitry and electronics, campers will also get to work with three unique robots: Dot™, Dash™, and Sphero SPRK™. Morning and afternoon explorations will alternate between Snap Circuits Light and Sphero, Dot, Dash robotics.

LEGO Harry Potter Master Engineering

Looking for an exploratory, hands-on STEM program based on building? This is it! Led by trained Play-Well instructors, campers will be guided through daily activities and challenges incorporating physics, engineering, and architecture based on the week’s theme. This week incorporates a fun, imaginative world that kids already know: Harry Potter. Play-Well engineering is about the process, not the result, which means this camp is a great place for kids to learn and discover through play.

LEGO Mine, Craft, Build: Survival Game

Looking for an exploratory, hands-on STEM program based on building? This is it! Led by trained Play-Well instructors, campers will be guided through daily activities and challenges incorporating physics, engineering, and architecture based on the week’s theme. This week incorporates a fun, imaginative world that kids already know: Minecraft. Play-Well engineering is about the process, not the result, which means this camp is a great place for kids to learn and discover through play.

Invention Convention

Does your child enjoy taking things apart to see how they work, or dream of designing a robot to clean their room? Then don’t miss this invention-themed week, where campers will create a blueprint, build a prototype, and pitch their own invention to fix a problem or help a community. Using LittleBits magnetic electric circuitry, they’ll be able to bring their ideas to life in our digitalized world. We’ll also learn about famous innovators and the obstacles they had to overcome to achieve their dreams. At the end of the week, campers will present their ideas to counselors and fellow group members “shark tank” style for compliments and critique.

Conservation Crusaders

Headfirst goes green as we celebrate nature and environmental conservation! This week will feature interactive activities and experiments, such as building mini-greenhouses, creating natural cleaners, and making our own water filtration systems. We’ll discuss conservation techniques, innovative methods for safeguarding the environment, and cutting-edge green technology. The week culminates in a group project for campers to create and record their own environmental Public Service Announcement, hopefully creating a new generation of green leaders and activists for the environment. May the forest be with you!

Broadcast Bootcamp

Welcome to Boot Camp, where we’ll be covering the basics of broadcast journalism, including the evolution of the news, tips for conducting interviews and analyzing the validity of sources, and how to write a compelling program. Campers will work with iMovie and a green screen, compare “real” versus “fake” news, and learn about their responsibilities as digital citizens. They’ll also work in teams to write, deliver, and film their own news programs, highlighting stories they’re passionate about, from Entertainment to Politics. They’ll even script and record their own advertisements. Quiet on set! We’re on in 3…2…1…

High Tech Tinkering

Using the Electric Motors Catalyst kit from Tinkering Labs™, campers will create multiple projects showcasing the power of the electric motor. To get the creative juices flowing, the kits include Challenge Cards, with instructions such as: build a machine that draws curvy lines, make a device that can scramble an egg, and invent a robot that moves without wheels. Each kit has 50+ parts, which can be built and rebuilt into infinite possibilities. Campers have the option to work individually or with partners, and at the end of the week, they’ll get to take their Electric Motors Catalyst kits home for more tinkering fun.

Claymation

Is your camper ready to be molded into the next great animator?  We can help! During our Edventures™ Claymation week, campers will collaborate on a storyboard, bring clay characters to life, and film and edit an original stop-motion animation movie. Using Claytoon™ clay, bendy bones, and modeling tools, campers will learn the fundamentals of sculpture.  They’ll also explore how to use HUE HD™ cameras and mics to capture the ideal shots, and how to effortlessly weave stills together on HUE Animation Studio™.  Claymation week will challenge campers to see themselves as directors, writers, editors, and videographers, culminating in a celebratory film festival.

LEGO Boost + iPad Coding

What do a workable guitar, a friendly cat, and a humanoid robot have in common? They’re the beginning of endless creations campers can engineer during LEGO Boost™ Robotics week! This visual learning platform is ‘learn-by-doing’ and will challenge campers to tinker and toggle their way through engaging projects. Once campers finish crafting their robots, they’ll be able to program them to detect light, color, sound, and touch, allowing the experience to be personalized and adapted to the coder’s interests. Awarded the 2018 Tech Toy of the Year for its utility, innovation, and charm, this week is one your camper won’t want to miss!

Swim & Waterplay

This camp includes a daily Water Play session. Water Play is a fun way for campers to cool off in the middle of the day. The water play activity will vary throughout the week, but will always be a fun and active way for campers to cool down from the summer heat.
