Sprouting Scientists

Sprouting Scientists is a hands-on science program designed to make curiosity, experimenting, and discovery feel exciting and accessible for young campers. Each week explores a kid-friendly theme — from Green Thumbs Galore to Veterinary Science to Caves & Crystals — through messy experiments, guided investigations, and playful STEM challenges. Campers are encouraged to make predictions, test ideas, learn from mistakes, and celebrate the “aha” moments that happen along the way. 

This developmentally appropriate introduction to science also includes plenty of time for outdoor play and cooling off through recreational swim or water play, depending on location. Campers wrap up each week with projects and discoveries that highlight their creativity, confidence, and growing scientific thinking.

What Makes this Headfirst Program Special

Sprouting Scientists introduces campers to the excitement of scientific thinking in an environment designed for exploration, creativity, and confidence-building. Each week’s theme gives campers the chance to experiment, make predictions, examine evidence, and learn from the surprises that come with real hands-on investigation.

As campers design, test, and refine their ideas, they practice important skills like persistence, flexible thinking, and optimistic problem-solving. They also learn how to share their process and present their findings — building early communication and public-speaking skills in a fun, age-appropriate way.

This blend of experimentation, teamwork, and creative inquiry helps strengthen the foundations of our Super Six confidence-building skills and invites campers to discover the joy of learning through play, exploration, and scientific wonder.

Swim & Water Play

At our Cathedral Heights, NW DC, and Oakton, VA locations, Sprouting Scientists enjoy daily water play — a refreshing and active break in the middle of their hands-on science day. Water play includes a large inflatable water slide and other fun activities that help campers stay cool while moving, exploring, and having fun with friends.

Activities vary throughout the week, but always provide a safe, engaging way for campers to beat the summer heat and enjoy time outdoors.
